Potter's Phoenix Gets A Release Date. Note: the OOTP movie release date seems to be correct. However, as delicious as the idea of OOTP being released a week after the seventh book and triggering the Potterdämmerung is, my understanding is that there is no book release date yet. I have no idea where Cinematical got this July book release from (not to mention the fact that it also happens to be the anniversary of the London bombings).

Near Dark Remake ... Nears. Some movies can stand to be remade. They either weren't that good the first time, or the concept will sustain a modernized update that becomes a film worth making unto itself. This is not one of those movies. Seriously, y'all, just put the original out in a few theaters. It's worth it.

"Casablanca" named greatest movie script. Here's the thing about Casablanca: you watch it for the first time, and it'll seem like the most cliched thing in the world. And the sad part is, this isn't even the movie's fault--it's because the script is so good that people have been quoting it to death for (checks watch) something like sixty years now. You feel like you've heard it all before, and there are no surprises.

But here's the thing: you watch it a second time, and suddenly the movie is transformed into something much better. You see, it's about memory and reminiscence and lovelorn nostalgia, right? Well, once you've got one viewing under your belt, you're part of that trip down Memory Lane. You remember the first time you saw it, you remember seeing them do all these things before--love and leave each other, and so on. So if you watch Casablanca for the first time and it leaves you cold, wait a few days, a few weeks, even, and try it again.

No audience for horror-comedies after Slither flops? You know, I think they're going about this all wrong. I would really enjoy a nice horror-comedy. What I wouldn't enjoy is a movie full of giant killer slugs. People may be willing to watch all kinds of repulsiveness in terms of Hostel-esque gore, but I'm not sure "things that go squish in the night" are ever going to pull in large audiences.

"In 15 years, nobody is going to be watching (current box office champ) 'Ice Age: The Meltdown.' Everybody is going to be watching DVDs of 'Slither,"' Roth said. Yeah, I wouldn't be too sure about that first part, Mr. Roth. Do you have young tyrants children? I rest my case.

Wiretapping Brouhaha Claims "Die Hard" Director.

McTiernan, a Hollywood veteran who also helmed The Hunt for Red October and Predator, was charged with one count of lying to FBI investigators, according to federal court documents. The charges read that, during a Feb. 13 interview with federal agents, McTiernan told them that he knew nothing about Pellicano's alleged wiretapping activities and had never discussed wiretapping with the detective, when in fact he had hired Pellicano to do a job for him.

The director, who faces five years in prison if convicted, was ordered to appear in court Apr. 17.

Meanwhile, Pellicano--who, if convicted, could go down in history as the world's most prominent eavesdropper--is looking at 20 years in prison for each count of racketeering he has been charged with. He's looking at a total of 110 charges of racketeering, conspiracy, identity theft, witness tampering and destruction of evidence. The detective has been accused of illegally wiretapping and filching confidential information about a number of prominent performers, journalists and businesspeople.

'Ice Age' Debut Nets $70.5M in Cold Cash. Meanwhile, Basic Instinct 2 makes $3 million. Yes, "three," single digit. An interesting theory I'm hearing from a couple of different places: in a nutshell, why pay $7-10 to see Sharon Stone naked in a crap movie when you can get porn on the internet for free?

United 93 trailer hitting too close to home? "One lady was crying. She was saying we shouldn't have [played the trailer]. That this was wrong ... I don't think people are ready for this." "I think the idea of holding any twenty year old up as a role model is completely idiotic. I’d like to make everyone in this room think about what they were doing at twenty, and hopefully it was a lot of sex and it was a lot of drinking and it was a lot of mistakes. It’s something you go through and it’s embarrassing, but it’s life. You’ve got to be able to do that." Hello, I am Keira Knightley and I am awesome.
